How to apply
You sign up for an apartment in two steps
1. The applicant signs up on Bjarg’s waiting list. Registration on the waiting list takes place electronically on Bjarg’s website, www.bjargibudafelag.is, through "My pages". Waiting list entries are generally sorted in the order in which they arrive and become active when the membership fee is paid. However, there was an initial exception, in that registrations received until and including 31st July 2018, were entered in a pool and applicants ordered by drawing lot.
2. Each time apartments are available for application, Bjarg sends an e-mail to everyone on the waiting list with further information. If an applicant is interested in a particular location, he/she must submit an application. Applications are done electronically on Bjarg’s website, www.bjargibudafelag.is, through "My pages". The applicant with the lowest number on the waiting list and who fulfills all the conditions for allocation, taking priority criteria into account, cf. Article 4 of the allocation rules, will be offered an apartment.
Instructions for step 1, signing up on the waiting list
Fill out the application as accurately as possible. Applications can be refused if inadequate or if the information provided is inaccurate.
By signing up on the waiting list you allow Bjarg, in case of an allocation, to verify provided information by sending an inquiry to the Directorate of Internal Revenue (rsk.is), regarding income and assets, to Registers Iceland (skra.is) regarding family status and to the listed Union regarding membership.
By signing up on the waiting list, you confirm that you are in compliance with all general conditions of Bjarg allocation rules. Bjarg does not confirm that an applicant actually meets all conditions until an apartment is available and an applicant is eligible due to his/her status on the waiting list.
You must pay to be on a waiting list, according to the list of tariffs (now 1,500 ISK per year). As long as you are on the waiting list, you must pay a yearly maintenance fee. If you don’t pay, you will be removed from the list.
Waiting list registrations become active when membership fee has been received.
You can apply for an apartment that allows you to keep pets. It must be kept in mind for such an application that those apartments are relatively few and a longer waiting period may be expected.
Note that registration on the waiting list is not an application for an apartment. Bjarg sends information about apartments as they are available for applications.
Instructions for step 2, applying for an apartment
Each time apartments are available for application, Bjarg sends an e-mail to everyone on the waiting list with further information. If an applicant is interested in a particular location, he/she must submit an application. Applications are done electronically on Bjarg’s website, www.bjargibudafelag.is, through "My pages". The applicant with the lowest number on the waiting list and who fulfills all the conditions for allocation, taking priority criteria into account, cf. Article 4 of the allocation rules, will be offered an apartment.
Check your registration carefully and make corrections if necessary. You can not make corrections after an application has been submitted therefore the application has to be as accurately as possible. Applicants are responsible for providing and registering correct and adequate information and Bjarg does not confirm that an applicant actually meets all conditions until an apartment is available and an applicant is eligible due to his/her status on the waiting list.
Note that only families with children can apply for family apartments (3, 4 and 5 bedroom apartments).
Applying is for a particular apartment type/apartment size in a particular house.
There can be no more than 2 persons per room in each apartment (exceptions can be made in the case of very young children).
By submitting an application you allow Bjarg, in case of an allocation, to verify provided information by sending an inquiry to the Directorate of Internal Revenue (rsk.is), regarding income and assets, to Registers Iceland (skra.is) regarding family status and to the listed Union regarding membership.
It is important that you are easily accessible if they are eligible for allocation, so make sure to list the right/active phone number and email address. You have 7 days to confirm your allocation and pay confirmation fee, 30,000 ISK. The application is canceled if the offer has not been answered. The confirmation fee is non-refundable if you cancel your application, otherwise, it will form a part of the security deposit according to the rental agreement.
My application is registered "on hold", why is that?
